There are a lot of places of interest in Great Britain. But the main attraction is London places of interest. Among them there are:Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the London Bridge, the Tower of London.First of all I want to say some words about the British Parliament.
The Palace of Westminster is the official name of the Houses of Parliament. The Parliament consists of the House of Lords, where the lords sit, and the House of Commons. This place has several towers: the Clock Tower (Big Ben) and the Victoria Tower.
Near the Houses of Parliament is Westminster Abbey, one of the oldest churches in London.
Westminster Abbey is a royal church; in this church the coronation ceremony of English kings and queens takes place. In the church there are tombs of many English rulers, and memorials to famous statesmen, writers and scientists such as Darwin and Watt. In this church is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a memorial to the British soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War.
The Tower of London is one of the most imposing and popular of London’s historical sites. It comprises not one, but twenty towers. The oldest of which, the White Tower, dates back to the 11th and the time of William the Conqueror. Nowadays a lot of tourist visit the Tower of London, because of the Tower’s evil reputation as a prison. This place is also famous for the Crown Jewels. They include the Crown of Queen Elizabeth which contains the celebrated Indian diamond.
The royal observatory ‘’Greenwich’’is situated 10 miles outside London on a hill above the river Thames. The Observatory contains telescopes and about astronomy, including Halley’s Comet and Black Holes.You can take a river boat to Greenwich from the Westminster Bridge.
Stratford-on-Avon lies 93 miles north-west of London. Shakespeare was born here in 1564, and here he died in 1616. The fact is that one of the main theatre of London is “The Globe”. One of its main founders was William Shakespeare. It was built on the southern bank of the river Thames in 1599. It had been working for fourteen years, when the fire occurred and destroyed the building. It was rebuilt, but destroyed again in1644.‘’The Globe’’ we see now was reconstructed only in 1997 and as historicans say it is much alike its original. You can’t see modern equipment or electric light there and even the roof of it is made of hey.
Not far from the village of Edwinstowe in Nottyngemshir county there is one of the most famous forests in the world- Sherwood forest. Nowadays Sherwood is more a park area than a wood. A huge National Reserved was opened 50 years ago. If we believed a legend the residence of Robin Good is situated in a great oak. There are a lot of others interesting ancient sites in this forests. For example an acoustic anomaly was discovered at the edge of Sherwood. If you say just a few words in a whisper a person 100 miles far will hear you. Also scientists found there big stones not far from the place, where as they said, Vikings hold their meetings.
Oxford and Cambridge are the most famous university cities not only in the UK but in the whole world. Oxford is the capital of Oxfordshir county and is known due to its university, which is the oldest and the most prestigious one in Europe. Henri VIII ordered to built Christ Church in 1546. It’s the largest colledge of Oxford. Since that time its bell called ‘’Old Tom’’ rings 101 times every evening (101 is the number of monks who founded the colledge. Boldinsc library was founded in 1598. It is the largest library in Oxford, where you can find 6 million books. Ashmola museum was founded in 1683. It is the first English museum which was opened free for visitors. You can also find world wide known pubs in Oxford.
The fourth according to its importance in Britain is Daremsk University. It is situated in Daremsk Castle, which is famous because well known films about Harry Potter were shot there.
Loch Ness is a magic lake in Scotland, which is associated with the legend about monster Nessy. It’s one of the largest reserves in fresh drinkable water. It was formed over 300 million years ago. The waters of the lake are dark because of the huge reserves of peat. The Romans at the beginning of Christian’s epoch told people about strange monster. In 1957 a book about Nessy ‘’This is more than a legends’’, where you can find the stories of 117 witnesses, was published. The monster is described as a creature with small head, long neck and a large body. You can even find photos and videos of it.
Chester Zoo is the largest of all British zoos. Its territory is more than 160 sq.km.. It was opened in 1913 due to the lover of animals George Motershed. Most of the animals and plants, which can be watched in the zoo are exotic and endangered of extinction. The main treasure of the zoo the best collection of elephants and caves bats in the world. Moreover you can find the largest enclosure with apes and a large collection of butterflies. For the visitors attendance monorail road was built.
