Do you want to know the mystery of one of the most enigmatic places on the planet? Now we will try to find out what actually conceals one of the wonders of the world – Stonehenge. The great and ancient stone circle of Stonehenge is situated on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England. It’s thought that the name Stonehenge originates from Anglo- Saxon period – the old English word “henge” meaning “the hanging stones”.
This stone construction drew people over 5,000 years and visitors from all over the world come to marvel at this amazing feat of engineering. Now we can only guess about the original purpose of Stonehenge and maybe we will never know its full significance. No other place has generated so much speculation and wild theories as the Stonehenge.
In the Roman period, it was believed that the British rebel Queen Boudicca had been buried at Stonehenge, and that the mystical stone circle was built by the Druids to mark her tomb. Other legends connect the construction of Stonehenge with the name of wizard Merlin.
One of the modern versions is that it was built by extra-terrestrial visitors in ancient times. Some archaeologists believe that the stones of Stonehenge are the giant calendar. Only thanks to many years of working English professor and astronomer Gerald Hawkins, who used in his research the latest electronic computers, failed to prove that Stonehenge was the largest megalithic observatory of ancient civilizations, which defines the solar and lunar eclipse, winter and summer solstices, etc. According to estimates, it took 300 years of continuous work of thousands of people for its construction.
Stonehenge and Avebury were inscribed on the World Heritage List for their outstanding prehistoric monuments. At Stonehenge, the unparalleled stone circle is surrounded by a ceremonial landscape comprising more than 300 burial mounds and major prehistoric monuments such as the Stonehenge Avenue, the Cursus, Woodhenge and Durrington Walls.
To my mind Stonehenge is the most mysterious symbol of Britain, the eighth wonder of the world and the largest puzzle of the ancient time. It is the integral part of Great Britain, it gives this country special charm of the mystery.
